Peter Pan Murals

These are a couple Peter Pan murals I just finished for Fieldstone homes in their Magna UT model homes. The first is a Captain Hook scene. And the second is the Mermaid Lagoon. Both were very fun to draw and paint. Including preliminary sketch time, it took me about 9 days to complete both of these murals.

On April 18 2008 I happily married Jay Powell, and so my new name is Emmalee Glauser Powell. As an artist I would rather be known as Emmalee Powell, but I figure the change will take a few years.

Well the big Ghana art show is over and I'll soon be selling prints of some of my paintings and maybe the originals.

BYU Weekly was kind enough to do some interviews on our Ghana project with the other Ghana artists and myself. You can click the link above to view it. It's awesome! Raquel did a great job!

Other thoughts: I am now on my 9th day of being sick-- frankly I'm sick of it. I've got stuff to paint...

Exhibit Extended through the end of October

This Art show is about the nature and love of God as seen through his children. While in Ghana , it seemed every person I met exhibited Christ-like attributes of Faith, Humility, Gratitude, Sacrifice, devotion and consecration, service, and many other things. In each of my paintings I have sought to communicate some of these ideas.

Time Out

I spent most of today in "time out" . . . but it wasn't so bad. Actually, it was kinda fun and relaxing with just myself, the smell of paint, and a good audio book. Did I mention I love being an artist? Even if I'm not painting some grand masterpiece, sometimes I think it is better when I'm not. . . because then I am not as stressed out. . .

Here's a few hour study I worked on today-

I just love this man and his family. They live every principle of the Gospel of Jesus Christ 200%. Family scriptures morning and night, emergency preparedness, temple service... to name a few. Plus they are incredibly loving and trusting. And it just makes me feel good when I hear from them.

Waiting at the Doctor's Office

Sometimes I feel like life is full of waiting- like at a doctor's office. An old man vaguely resembling this character zipped out the door in a wheelchair while I was still WAITING. I don't think it's a coincidence that those waiting to see a doctor are called "patients."

So there I was lying wide awake in bed. I'm usually asleep by now--- but curiously I feel like Hammy on "Over the Hedge"--- way to much energy........ ... ... ... so I thought I post some stuff I've been workin on.

1st Work in Progress- Holiness to the Lord
This painting depicts pioneer Joseph William Billy Johnson in front of the Accra Ghana Temple. It's 30"x40" and taken about 2 weeks to paint thus far. Pretty much he is one of the most amazing men I've ever met. Around him humility, gratitude, faith, and love are not just nice ideas they are tangible and flow out of his being. What I mean is I felt all those things when I met him. I've spent the last year pondering why and how he is who he is and how I can become like that. My conclusion: When one sacrifices and consecrates his whole life to the Lord the result is a person who not only teaches of Christ- but emulates him.

2nd Work in Progress- A Boat to Narnia or Prydain?

So this little ship began as some doodles one Friday night and a life-long dream of being a wood carver. I love wood, it smells nice. It's 2" high , 4" long, and 1.5" wide. This is only a scale model- the real thing is a small vessel with a crew of ten men and possibly a couple passengers. It is swift and is great at manuevering on the ocean, sea, or even wide rivers. Originally, I thought this would be a fast and fun thing to work on during movies, family functions, and when I'm taking a break from painting, but I soon discovered this wood is not Balsa wood-- as I originally thought--- and when blisters pop they are painful. Next time I'll be sure and get some balsa wood... On second thought... maybe I should stick to painting :)

3rd Work in Progress- A What?
This cute sea monster began as an abstract form that somehow acquired teeth and eyes. My sister says he's scary- but I disagree. He's cute (maybe not cute and cuddly). C'mon he doesn't have sharp teeth- they're like the teeth (Baleen?) a Humpback Whale has-- so he only eats plankton- not people. He's from the prehistoric days- possibly Jurassic Period- scientists are still unsure. (It's difficult to give more exact estimate when all they found was this head mounted on a cave wall in Antarctica. Amazing what a little global warming and melting ice caps reveal). I imagine the rest of his body with flippers similar to a sea turtle--- but probably won't have a shell. Seems like a shell would've been lying somewhere around the cave too, but it's been millions of years so your guess is as good as mine. What do you think?

Surfer Mural

This Surfer is in a model home in Springville. He is about 4'x4' and completed on May 31, 2007. I think my little brother did a great job pretending to surf. Maybe he should quit pursuing a career in electronics and be a model.
As a side note: The little island and boat in the background are Ghanaian :)

Puppets- Why Not?

So sometimes I think it's necessary to grab some miscellaneous material , maybe a sock, some buttons, or fur and see what happens.

This was my first puppet-- constructed in Fall 06. I call him Bas Kin Robbins. He grew out of the melted ice cream mess on the floor of Baskin Robbins. All 31 ice cream flavors melted together, he has a bit of a lisp and tries to act smarter than he really is. He blatantly refuses to consume ice cream for some unknown reason. Despite his questionable background and upbringing he has risen to become quite a star among sock puppets. In one production he played the role of an "overgrown alligator" and threatened the livelihood of a man and a sleeping baby to the cheers of a loving audience of second graders.

Next is The Pirate... Originally, this trouser sock, soft-sculpted rod puppet, was to be a friendly Ghanaian, but greed and the love of treasure transformed him into the pirate he is today. He is proud of his lovely, authentic, hand-stitched, leather pirate boots and his coat hanger hook. Sadly, his pride has been the cause of many scuffles and the rod of his hook arm is broken and he lost his Capt'n hat. Now he only grumbles and angrily shouts pirate profanities.

Lastly, for today, there is Ralph RacoIn. This cute little muppet loves to play with children, especially babies, when they aren't too afraid to look at him. He is clueless as to the cause of their fear. He is the youngest of the 15 racoons in the RacoIn family. Raised in a Mansion house in Georgia he is a true southern gentlemen with the best of manners, and upmost respect for all women. When he played the role of the Big Bad Wolf in Little Red Riding Hood, he remained his proper, dignified self, even bowing and presenting flowers to Little Red and her Grandma. Yet, they remained afraid and shunned him-- possibly because of his ease and smoothness in conversation. He is often misconceived as a sly trickster, when all he really wants is to be polite and have friends.
